The London Symphony Orchestra announces the final stage of an innovative commissioning project giving three UK based composers – normally aged under 40, with some experience of writing for a symphony orchestra – the opportunity to work with the LSO.

The UBS Soundscapes: Pioneers series will comprise of three, 5 minute commissions for the 2010/11 season developed by composers working directly with the Orchestra. The composers selected will be given the chance to hear their piece in an open workshop. This will give successful applicants a chance to adjust their ideas and orchestrations prior to the premiere at the Barbican.

To apply, please visit http://lso.co.uk/jobsvacancies and download the instructions and application form.

UBS Soundscapes: Pioneers has been running since 2005 (formerly as LSO & UBS Sound Adventures). With generous support from UBS, the LSO presents this innovative commissioning project that brings new musical gems to audiences and gives UK composers from a wide variety of musical backgrounds the opportunity to work with and write for a symphony orchestra on the world stage.

The UBS Soundscapes: Pioneers series comprises short pieces developed by composers working directly with the orchestra, with each commission appearing as a bonus item at an LSO main season concert. Each composer will hear their composition rehearsed in a public workshop by the LSO well in advance of its premiere, giving them valuable time to refine and rework their piece prior to mainstream exposure at the Barbican. The first chapter of the scheme, which began in 2005, saw 18 composers take part. Another nine composers will be commissioned from 2009 to 2011, and selected previous participants will have the opportunity to write a longer work for the orchestra.

Six composers have been commissioned so far to write works for the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons:

2008/09 season
Dorothy Kerr
Matthew King
Paul Newland

2009/10 season
Charlotte Bray
Gary Carpenter
Ian Vine
